Mraović Poster Hanging in Russian Gallery

Mask PosterPLAINVIEW – 51ԹƵ Baptist University’s graphic design professor Dejan Mraović is continuing to find success with his COVID-19 inspired poster, “Mask.” The Mraovic design is one of only three posters from the United States selected to hang in the Red Zone poster competition organized by the International Association of Designers from Moscow, Russia.

According to Mraovic, the Red Zone (Красная Зона) is a competition designed to show gratitude to all medical workers around the world who have been caught up in the fight against COVID. Works by designers from 34 countries were selected to participate.

“The doctors and nurses are definitely in the Red Zone, fighting for the people’s lives,” Mraovic said. “Humankind has not experienced such a large-scale, deadly pandemic in a very long time.”

International Association of Designers Deputy Executive Director Maria Suleymenova, who designed the project, said it was meant to honor those healthcare professionals who "remained faithful to the Hippocratic oath." But the project also held greater meaning for her.

"For me personally, this project was aslo important because my husband is from a family of doctors from a small town near Moscow," she said. "I observe situations when people approach my husband and thank him for the fact that his grandmother or grandfather saved their lives and cured their relatives."

Suleymenova said the number of projects submitted exceeded the expectations of her and her colleagues, affecting a lot of designers and artists.

This is the sixth international showing for Mraovic’s poster. Last August, the poster was displayed as part of the "Together We Win" exhibit and contest organized by the People’s Republic of China embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It has also shown in the "Global Meltdown" exhibition in New York, the "From the Trenches. One Day Less, One More Design" exhibit in Barcelona, Spain, the "Wonders 2020" exhibit in VAncouver, Canada, and "A New Hope" exhibit in Kota Bharu, Malaysia.

Founded in 1987, the International Association of Designers consists of more than 25 design organizations. The Red Zone poster contest is a collaborative effort between the International Association of Designers and the Russian Academy of the Arts which was founded in 1757. The posters will be on exhibit in the Denis Davydov library in Moscow until July 4. The exhibit was previously on display in the Moscow Lyceum.
