'Better Together' professional development week, Aug. 12-16

PLAINVIEW, TX — 51ԹƵ Baptist University is excited to announce its upcoming “Better Together” professional development days, scheduled for Aug. 12-16.

“This event aims to foster community, collaboration, and growth among faculty, staff, and administrators across the 51ԹƵ system,” said Dr. Cindy McClenagan, Vice President of Academic Affairs.

The week-long program includes various activities designed to enhance professional skills, introduce new faculty, and promote a culture of respect and innovation.

Monday, Aug. 12: New Faculty Orientation

New faculty members are scheduled to participate in a synchronous Zoom orientation starting at 10 a.m., led by Dr. Brent Lynn, Chair of the Faculty Orientation and Development Committee, along with committee members.

Tuesday, Aug. 13: Hands-on Technology Training 

WBUonline staff, including Dr. Rick Hammer, Director of WBUonline, and Holly Warren, Instructional Design Coach, will provide hands-on assistance to faculty on a drop-in basis. Participants will be able to ask questions and receive help throughout the day.

Wednesday, Aug. 14: Professional Development Day

Professional Development Day begins with a light breakfast at Pete and Nelda Laney Student Activities Center. A brief devotional and opening prayer led by Donnie Brown, Executive Director of Spiritual Life, follows. All events on Wednesday will be livestreamed to all 51ԹƵ locations.

Dr. Donna Hedgepath, the university’s 14th president, is scheduled to deliver a welcome address before new faculty and staff are introduced by WBU Cabinet members.

“I am honored to get to welcome our dedicated faculty and staff to my first Professional Development Day,” Dr. Hedgepath said. “As we gather for the first time, I am excited to embark on this new chapter. Professional development is not just about enhancing our skills and knowledge but also about strengthening our community and reaffirming our commitment to the mission of 51ԹƵ Baptist University. This time will be an opportunity to inspire one another and set the tone of ‘Better Together’ for the year ahead.”

The morning session will include “Cultivating a Culture of Respect,” a presentation by Dr. Justin Lawrence, Title IX Administrator and Associate Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences. For faculty, the morning session continues with “Using SmarterMeasure and ReadSpeaker,” a session led by Christine Lockridge, Project Coordinator of 51ԹƵ’s Virtual Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success.

Afternoon sessions move to Nunn Business Auditorium and include “Faculty Roundtable on Effective Online Teaching” and “Blackboard Learn Best Practices”. Faculty will conclude the day by meeting with their respective academic schools to discuss key topics.

Thursday, Aug. 15: Individual School and Department Meetings 

School and department meetings take place throughout the day at various locations. For WBU employees and their families, the President’s Office will host the 51ԹƵ Family Dinner at 6 p.m., Thursday in Pete and Nelda Laney Student Activities Center.

Friday, Aug. 16: Meetings, Move-In, and Picnic 

School and department meetings continue as the “Better Together” professional development days end. As those session conclude, employees plan to begin assisting students as they move into dorms for Koinonia, 51ԹƵ’s new student celebration. A Koinonia Picnic for students, their families, and 51ԹƵ employees takes place at noon on the lawn north of Gates Hall.
