51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Graphic Design program is certainly making an impact this semester! It has recently been announced that Senior Evan Puckett from Plainview has had not one, but three pieces selected for an international show in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 12th Lessedra International Painting & Mixed Media Exhibition will feature art produced by 115 artists from 33 different countries in the form of painting, drawing, collage, watercolor, photography, digital productions, and mixed media.
The Lessedra group wishes to gain understanding and appreciation for art in a variety of mediums. This annual international exhibition is held “to contribute to the contacts and the exchange between artists, art lovers and collectors and to stimulate the research into [various art forms] . . . With a Respect to the Quality of Art, not to the Size of Art!”
Puckett, a Graphic Design major, produced his submissions in classes taken with Graphic Design professor, Dejan Mraović.
“Evan Puckett is in incredible company; out of [7] other Americans selected, two are professors at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ and Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY. The rest are full-time, professional exhibiting artists,” Mraović said. “That means that the only American art student selected for this show is Evan Puckett from 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University.”
This is a proud moment for the Graphic Design Program and 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ as a whole. Evan Puckett is now the 6th student from 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ with either a major or a minor in Graphic Design that has had work exhibited or published on the international level in the last two years.
Puckett’s three pieces demonstrate his passion for Texas life and history as well as his delight in satire.
"I took the approach of comedic absurdity with an emphasis on the Wild West,” Puckett said. “I grew up in Texas and have always had a fascination with Texan history and its aesthetics.”
Done in digital photomontage, Puckett’s work warps proportion to the extreme resulting in ridiculous hilarity.
“I made a cowboy with a huge gun because the classic Old West saying, Big Iron refers to their revolvers. Regarding the second piece [Quickest Cluck in the Wild West], it is funny to imagine one of the smallest farm animals in a gargantuan state,” Puckett said. “In Clayton the Big Fish, I wanted to emphasize the Texan culture of going fishing. I found it amusing to put humanoid features on a catfish. It is also nice to see a catfish in a state other than pan-fried. One of my main goals in life is to make people laugh, and comedic work feels underrepresented."
A delight to viewers, his work certainly does just that!
The 12th Lessedra International Painting & Mixed Media Exhibition will open in Sofia, Bulgaria on December 15, 2021 and will run until March 25, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ. More information about the exhibition or Lessedra can be found at their site:
