SUBJECT: WAYLAND BAPTIST UNIVERSITY - LEGAL BASIS

The legal basis presented below is for use in grant applications, contracts, and other purposes requiring a citation of legal authority.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University is a coeducational institution located in the city of Plainview, Texas. The university was founded in 1906 and chartered by the state of Texas in 1908 as 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Literary and Technical Institution to accommodate students from the primary grades through college. The name was changed in 1910 to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist College to reflect the institution's status as a junior college. In 1948, the university's charter was amended to reflect the institution's approval as a senior college by the Texas Department of Education and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1981, the charter was again amended to reflect the change in mission from that of a college to that of a university.

The university is chartered as a religious, arts and sciences, and vocational-technical institution of higher education. It is a non-profit corporation operated under the patronage and general direction of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and holds all of its property in trust for and conducts its affairs in accordance with the policies of the Baptist denomination as represented by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The affairs of the university are governed by a Board of Trustees.
