SHRM Student Chapter Collecting Socks for Vets

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University’s student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is collecting Socks for Vets as one of its community service projects for 2021. This is the third year that Student Chapter #5583 has collected the socks. The project is done in part to fulfill SHRM community service requirements.

“Each year, our students have organized events in fulfillment of this element of student chapter evaluation,” said Dr. Mary Rydesky, chapter liaison to SHRM. “Because we are a Christian school and a school that is highly supportive of the military, activities that reach veterans in need tend to appeal to many members of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ family.”

The sock drive directly benefits veterans. 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ works with the director of the volunteer office at the VA clinic in Anchorage to collect new socks. The clinic distributes the socks to veterans in need.

Socks for Vets is not the only project undertaken by the SHRM student chapter. The group also supports the Beans’ Café outreach to the homeless in Anchorage, many of whom are also veterans. Recently, Student Chapter #5583 received the award for Outstanding Merit, the top honor given to student chapters, for its charitable work.

The Socks for Vets program will continue through December. Anyone interested in participating can donate a new pair of socks at the university or directly to the VA clinic in care of Jeanne Fox, voluntary service specialist, 1201 N. Muldoon Road in Anchorage. Please include a message referencing SHRM #5583.
