City Councilwoman Honored as Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

SIERRA VISTA – A graduate of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University who sits on the Sierra Vista city council was honored by her alma mater during the Sept. 8 commencement ceremony in the city. Dr. Angelica Landry was named Distinguished Alumni Award honoree for 2021 for the campus, one of 11 in the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ system.

A native of small-town Iowa, Dr. Landry was raised by a Hispanic single mother who instilled values like faith and a strong work ethic. She attended a local community college and worked in the school district. She met her future husband Keith in 2011 and they married in March 2012 shortly after he retired from the Army, choosing Sierra Vista as their forever home.

Dr. Landry returned to the classroom soon thereafter to earn her bachelor’s degree with 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ, completing the degree in computer information systems with honors in 2014 and immediately beginning her MBA. Just after completing that degree in 2016, she enrolled in 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s new Doctor of Management degree program and graduated in December 2018 as one of the first to complete.

She works as an instructional designer for the U.S. Army on Fort Huachuca and still teaches adjunctly for 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ. She is a new member on the City Council in Sierra Vista and enjoys giving back to her community in that way.  The Landrys are active in First Baptist Church of Sierra Vista and serve with The Good Neighbor Alliance. She also serves on the Salvation Army Advisory Board and was nominated for Sierra Vista Citizen of the Year in 2019.

“51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s alumni are great examples of what makes this university so special in their service and character, and Angelica Landry has lived that out for sure,” said Teresa Young, director of alumni relations at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ. “We are honored that she is not only a part of our 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ family, but continues to impact current students with her love for education and the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ experience. She is doing great things in her community and we are proud to be able to honor those accomplishments both past and future.”

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Alumni Association has presented Distinguished Alumni Awards to graduates over the homecoming weekend for many years. The program was expanded a few years ago to include a winner for each campus’ alumni. An Alumnus of the Year is chosen annually from the various campus winners and announced at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Homecoming in February.
