Trustees Celebrate Scholarship Dedications

Hall ScholarshipPLAINVIEW – The 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University Board of Trustees celebrated the dedication of two newly endowed scholarships Thursday afternoon honoring a board member and his family and the parents of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ President Dr. Bobby Hall.

The Tim and Stacie Hardage Endowed Scholarship is named in honor of WBU Trustee Tim Hardage and his family. Tim and Stacie graduated from 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ in 1989. Tim’s father, the late Dr. Bill Hardage, was a long-time student, coach and administrator at the university. Tim and Stacie’s daughters, Ashley Edlin and Carley Hunt, were on hand, along with their husbands, Mark and Cameron, respectively.

Dr. Hall recognized the family for their contributions to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ.

“It is really a privilege for me because of close friendships, long relationships, and close family ties, to get to recognize Tim and Stacie for this scholarship,” Hall said. “I go back with the Hardage family for a long time. I worked for Tim’s dad. I took Tim’s dad’s place when he died unexpectedly. I miss him to this day. These guys are as good as it gets. You want 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ people? … They bleed blue and gold.”

The Hardages established the scholarship to provide financial support for students who desire to earn a degree in higher education in a distinctively Christian environment.

Following the Hardage dedication, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Senior Vice President of Operations and 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Dr. Claude Lusk recognized Dr. Hall and his family for creating the T.G. and Marie Hall Endowed Scholarship.

“It’s fitting that we endow scholarships for Halls and Hardages on the same day,” Lusk said. “The connection of Halls and Hardages is inextricable in the life of this institution. It’s an honor to be a part of this.”

Tom Hall and his wife, Linda, and sister Carol Hall Lawrence were on hand to celebrate the occasion with their brother, Dr. Hall and his wife, Laurie. Close family friend Dr. Mike Davis also joined in the celebration.

T.G. and Marie Hall graduated from Plainview High School. While Marie attended Lippert Business College, T.G. served three and a half years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. They married in 1946 in Plainview. Marie worked for Farmers Home Administration for 40 years. Upon retirement, she worked as a bookkeeper for Plains Federal Credit Union. T.G. spent nearly 30 years in the automobile business then worked for the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Post Office from 1983-89. This endowed scholarship in their memory will ensure that the values they shared of the importance of higher education will continue to impact future generations of students at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ.

“It’s hard to put into words the impact that those two individuals have had on the people of this region through their own service and the lives and service of their children,” Lusk said. “It’s impressive for me to think about.”

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ currently has 376 endowed scholarships that provides approximately $1 million per year to students in need. Scholarships are set up by the donors to benefit specific academic areas or student groups. A donor has five years to reach the endowed level of $25,000. Once fully endowed, interest from the fund is used as scholarships. Donors are encouraged to continue giving to the fund in order to grow the endowment, generating more interest to assist students in need.
