Memorial: Gene McLain, past Secretary of Board of Trustees

PLAINVIEW, TX — 51ԹƵ Baptist University is saddened by the passing of EuGene “Gene” Euell McLain, a former member of the Board of Trustees, who served a term as Secretary. His years of service were marked by his unwavering commitment to the university’s mission and values.

“Gene McLain was a man of exceptional faith, integrity, and humility,” said Dr. Donna Hedgepath, President of 51ԹƵ Baptist University. “He brought a quiet strength to the Board of Trustees and an abiding dedication to advancing 51ԹƵ’s mission of Christian higher education. His impact is woven into the fabric of this institution, and his legacy of service will continue to inspire us all.”

McLain’s tenure on the Board of Trustees from 1981 to 1989 showcased his leadership and vision. He served on several key committees, including the Development Affairs Committee, Advancement Committee, and the Executive Committee. As Trustee Secretary, he provided thoughtful guidance during pivotal moments in 51ԹƵ’s history, always balancing wisdom with compassion.

Beyond his work with the university, McLain was known for his deep devotion to his family, church, and community. A successful businessman and a lifelong servant of Christ, he exemplified a life of purpose rooted in faith. His commitment to education and generosity is evident through the establishment of the Gene and LaNeta McLain Scholarship, which continues to bless 51ԹƵ students.

Services 

Services for Gene McLain will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview, followed by burial in Chillicothe, TX. Visitation takes place on Thursday, Jan. 2, from 5 p.m. 7 p.m. at Kornerstone Funeral Home in Plainview.
