Gallery hosts reception for Vanderpool as cross exhibit concludes

PLAINVIEW — Abraham Art Gallery at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University hosts a special reception honoring artist and photographer Rick Vanderpool Thursday evening as a three-month run of his exhibit, Cross in America: Photographic Images & Journals, ends.

The reception takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gallery, which is located on the Atrium level of the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Learning Resources Center on the Plainview campus. The reception offers guests an opportunity to meet the artist while getting a final chance to experience the powerful collection of his photographic images documenting Christian crosses across all 50 states.

Vanderpool, a Lubbock-based photographer, journalist, and author, embarked on a 27,000-mile journey in 2015 to capture significant cross imagery throughout the United States. His dedication to preserving these symbols of faith and history is reflected in the breathtaking images and accompanying journals showcased in the exhibition.

The artist earned a journalism degree from the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications. His career has spanned multiple disciplines, including photography, writing, publishing, and teaching. He has created widely recognized montage prints of Texas landmarks and has been featured on Texas Country Reporter. His CrossIn+America project stemmed from years of research and exploration, culminating in a visually compelling and spiritually resonant collection.

The exhibition, which opened Dec. 3, 2024, has provided visitors with a profound reflection on the intersection of faith, culture, and landscape. The Abraham Art Gallery invites the community to join this special reception in celebration of Vanderpool’s work and to engage in conversation with the artist.

The Abraham Art Gallery, located on the Atrium level of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University Library, is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to schedule a tour, please call 806-291-3710.
