PLAINVIEW — 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University joins the friends and family of Bertha Mieth in mourning her passing, while also celebrating her life of faithful service to the Lord.
Surrounded by family, Bertha transitioned to Heaven on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, following a brief illness.
A devoted servant and generous supporter of Christian higher education, Bertha, alongside her husband, Ben, dedicated her life to spreading the Gospel worldwide and advancing the mission of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ.
Ben and Bertha Mieth became part of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ family when their daughter attended the university, and from that moment forward, they invested their prayers, presence, and resources into its success. Their contributions to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ have been profound, touching the lives of students and faculty alike. Together, they established the Ben and Bertha Mieth Professorship in Global Missions, provided numerous scholarships, and made a lasting impact on the university’s facilities.
Most recently, Bertha and her husband provided a transformational gift of $2.5 million to upgrade the facilities and equipment of the Ben and Bertha Mieth School of Nursing at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s San Antonio campus, a school named in their honor. In addition, their recent generous $1 million gift is helping to enhance 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s multimedia facilities on the Plainview campus, moving the university closer to achieving the goal of the Thrive Campaign, which they have faithfully chaired together.
“Bertha Mieth has been a shining example of a life lived in faithful service to the Lord,” said Dr. Donna Hedgepath, President of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ. “She understood the power of Christian education to transform lives, and she and Ben have poured their hearts into supporting 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s mission. Her legacy will endure through the students she helped, the programs she strengthened, and the unwavering faith she shared with everyone. We are deeply grateful for her life and for the blessings she and Ben have brought to this university.”
Bertha’s heart for missions was evident throughout her life. After leading a mission team from First Baptist Church of Seminole to Mexico in 1971—where more than 1,500 people accepted Christ—she and Ben devoted themselves to global evangelism. Together, they founded International Commission, which has worked for more than 50 years to establish relationships with churches and equip believers to share the Gospel around the world.
Having been raised by a mother who served as a nurse and modeled hard work and unwavering faith, Bertha carried those values into nearly 70 years of marriage, standing beside Ben in their ministry endeavors. Their gift to the nursing school was aimed at honoring Bertha’s mother. Her granddaughter now carries on that legacy as a student in 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s nursing program.
At the opening of the new nursing school facilities in San Antonio in 2023, Bertha shared words that encapsulated her heart’s desire: “We will pray for 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ as we do every day. Let’s keep the light burning on this campus and other Christian campuses that 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has. Let’s keep the light burning for Christ because that is what it is all about—telling people about Christ.”
51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University honors the remarkable life of Bertha Mieth and offers its deepest condolences to her family. Her impact on this institution and the lives of countless students will never be forgotten.
