Faculty and staff recognized during Employee Awards Luncheon

PLAINVIEW — More than 50 members of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓÆµ Baptist University’s faculty and staff were recognized Tuesday during the institution’s annual Employee Awards Luncheon.

Honors included faculty and staff awards, retirement recognitions, promotions, and service milestones.

“We just thank you,” said Dr. Donna Hedgepath, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓÆµ President, after offering the invocation. “We appreciate all you do, and we're getting ready to embark on some hard work as we continue to improve what we do here to be a better 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓÆµ.”

She recognized three individuals who are retiring this year: Coralyn Dillard, Debbie Stennett, and Michael Tod Outlaw. She also presented service awards to employees, including Sheila Wood (35 years), Tommie Flick and Bertha Sistrunk (30 years), and 33 others reaching five-year benchmarks.

Dr. Cindy McClenagan, Vice President of Academic Affairs, introduced Dr. Matthew Allen, Professor of Biological Sciences, as 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓÆµ’s nominee for the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Professor Award.

“Each year, colleges and universities in Texas have the opportunity to submit a nominee to the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation for the Piper Professor Award,” Dr. McClenagan explained. “Established in 1958, this annual award recognizes a faculty member for superior teaching at the college level.”

Four faculty promotions were announced:

  • Dr. Kenneth Freeman, Dr. Autumn Lass, and Dr. Charles Nelms were promoted from Associate Professor to Professor.
  • Dr. Mark Bell was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor.

Staff Awards:

  • University Service Award: Justin Porter, In-House Production and Livestream Coordinator
  • Community Service Award: Jeffrey Vera, Director of Alumni Relations and Career Services
  • Campus/Student Involvement Award: Ryiann Araujo, Disability Services Coordinator
  • Excellence Award: Jessica Hernandez, Admissions Specialist

Faculty Awards:

  • University Service Award: Dr. Yahui Zhang, Associate Professor of Communications and Media Studies
  • Community Service Award: Ashley Edlin, Associate Professor of English
  • Scholarship Award: Dr. David Unfred, Professor of Business Administration
  • Contribution to Profession Award: Dr. Joshua Mora, Professor of Spanish

Rafael Aguilera, Executive Director of Human Resources, served as master of ceremonies and offered the benediction.

The annual Employee Awards Luncheon was presented by the university’s Hospitality Committee in collaboration with the Professional Affairs Committee, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓÆµ Alumni Association, Office of Human Resources, Office of Institutional Advancement, and Office of the President.
