For the second semester in a row, every 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Varsity esports team made it to playoffs. Rocket League, Rainbow Six, Super Smash Bros, and Fortnite all had winning records this season and put a foothold in NACE playoffs. For those who may be unfamiliar, NACE is a competitive esports program that has schools of all sizes competing. This includes Division One schools like Texas Tech and the University of Texas. Unlike NCAA or NAIA, there is no limit on school size, and in the midst of larger schools, two 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ teams found their way into the number one seed of their playoff brackets.
51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Fortnite had six teams in total make it to the championship bracket. The two Fortnite team captains said they performed excellently throughout the season and competed against many big-name schools to reach the top. Rocket League sadly lost in the first round of playoffs to California State University, Dominguez Hills 3-4. The team captain said he was extremely proud of them and that “we had a lot of highs and lows this season, but our highs were much bigger." Super Smash also had a great season. Two of three teams made it to the playoff bracket and had to face each other round one. Even though we were cheering for both teams, one team had to come out on top. Team Blue defeated Team Gold in a close set. Rainbow Six had one team make it to playoffs and are set to compete on April 10th.
The most impressive performances of these many teams are Super Smash Bros Team Blue and Rainbow Six Team Pioneers. Both of these teams clawed their way to the number one seed going into playoffs. Smash Blue went 7-1 and Rainbow Six Siege went 6-2 for the regular season. This is a huge accomplishment with 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ getting wins over schools like University of Texas at Tyler and Colorado School of Mines. These wins are huge because these two schools have thousands of students each, while 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has less than 1,000 Plainview campus students. Rainbow Six has a playoff game on the 24th and Super Smash Bros has a game on the 21st. Keep a look out on the Wyland esports twitch page for future updates. Let’s see where this playoff season will take these teams--hopefully a championship is on the horizon!
