Student Achievement Report

Student Achievement

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University is committed to providing an academically challenging and learning focused education for our students that leads to professional success for our graduates.  The university has identified the four overall areas below and measures student achievement in these areas in multiple ways.  Progress toward these goals are evaluated annually, with appropriate modifications made to institutional plans and to budgeted resources to address areas determined to fall below thresholds of acceptability set by the university.

Undergraduate Measures

Enrollment and Retention

Goal 1: Total Enrollment

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal to increase total fall head count by 4% over the next three years.  After multiple years of overall head count decline, 4% growth would break this trend and better position 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ financially to provide a better learning experience for all students.  Fall enrollment figures have been determined to be the most reliable checkpoint for the year, based on consistent related spring and summer numbers.

Since the goal has not been met in any recent year, a number of new strategies have been implemented to improve total enrollment, including third party consultation, increased human resources, and implementation of new computer programs and recruitment strategies.  The goal of these changes are to improve recruitment and to expedite the admissions process and the awarding of financial aid.

Goal 2: Composition of Enrollment – Gender

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ will maintain a reasonably equitable percentage of male and female students across the university system, where neither gender makes up more than 55% of the total student body.  51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ believes an equitable percentage of male and female students will contribute to a learning environment that represents both male and female experiences in the classroom.  It will also create a comfortable learning environment for both genders, which contributes positively to student learning.

Both MSI and HSI goals and thresholds were met in all years except 2024. This is due to a recent increase in the number of “unknown” designations recorded due to system data issues. Appropriate efforts are underway to identify and correct all system issues causing this gap in data.

Goal 4: Retention Data – First-time Full-time Students

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal to retain 54% of first-time full-time students from first year to second year.  The first to second year retention rate needs to be above 50% to enhance the opportunity for total enrollment growth goal above and improve the graduation rate below.  The goal of 54% is based on 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s historic performance.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has identified a series of strategies to improve retention in all of these areas.  These strategies include implementation of new software, establishment of a summer bridge program, enhancements to tutorial services and the first term orientation course, and increased personnel in academic coaching and financial aid.

Course Completion and Graduation

Goal 1: Total Graduation Data

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has selected the Traditional IPEDS Graduation Rate (150%; 6-year graduation rate) as our Key Student Completion Indicator (KSCI).  Using this measure, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has set a goal of 32% graduation rate for first-time full-time students.  51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s goal of 32% is significantly higher than historical rates, but represents our awareness of the need for improvement.

The goal has not been met in any year.  A mitigating circumstance, especially beginning with the class of 2016, has been the impact of COVID.  Implemented strategies for improvement are stated below.

Goal 2: Disaggregated Graduation Data

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has selected the Traditional IPEDS Graduation Rate (150%; 6-year graduation rate) as our Key Student Completion Indicator (KSCI).  Using this measure, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has set a goal of 32% graduation rate for first-time full-time students, regardless of gender, Pell-eligibility, and ethnicity.  This disaggregated data, however, helps 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ see trends in one or more populations that might allow improvement of graduation rates for all populations.

In demographic groups with large enough samples to be of statistical significance, very few groups met the goal in any year.  Overall, female students tend to graduate at a higher rate than males, non-Pell recipients tend to graduate at a higher rate than Pell recipients, and white students tend to graduate at a higher rate than other ethnicities. However, higher graduation rates are needed in all demographic groups in order to attain the goal of a higher overall graduation rate.  The strategies implemented above for student retention should begin to improve the graduation rate.

Goal 3: Course Completion

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a number of external campuses and an online program that serves a mobile population of adult learners.  The majority of these students are not first-time students but transfer to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ with hours from one or more institutions.  For this student population, course completion rates are a more accurate measure of student achievement and satisfactory academic progress, regardless of personal goals of individual students.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has set a goal of 90% of students successfully completing WBU courses.  For the combined semesters of Fall 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ and Spring 2023, the course completion rate for undergraduates was 96.5%.  The course pass rate was 88.19%.  Course completion rates of less than 90% indicate a need to examine causal factors and to make corresponding improvements to areas identified as contributing to student achievement or lack of achievement.

Graduate Success

Goal 1: Employment – Academic Major

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal that 65% of respondents to the WBU Alumni Survey will indicate that their current job is directly tied to their academic major.  In the most recent survey, 63% of respondents said their current job was directly related to their academic major.  While WBU did not meet its goal for employment student achievement, the response was above the university’s threshold of acceptability, set at 60%, which accounts for some students’ decisions to pursue jobs not directly tied to their majors.

Goal 2: Employment – Academic Degree

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal that 65% of respondents to the WBU Alumni Survey will indicate that their current job is appropriate to the academic degree they obtained.  In the most recent survey, 63% of respondents said that their current job was appropriate for the degree they obtained.  While 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ did not meet this goal for employment student achievement, the response was above the university’s threshold of acceptability, set at 60%, which allows for fact that some students may not choose to pursue employment or may choose to pursue additional schooling instead.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has implemented several strategies to improve student achievement for jobs.  These strategies include increased opportunities for internships, improving pre-professional workshops and training for job hunting, hosting a job fair each semester, and providing online career networking

Goal 3: Admission to Graduate School

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal that 20% of respondents to the Alumni Survey will indicate continuing their formal education after graduating from WBU.  In the most recent survey, 28% of respondents indicated they had continued their formal education after graduating from 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ, exceeding the university’s goal.

Goal 4: Persistence in Graduate School

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal that 80% of the respondents to the Alumni Survey who indicate they are continuing their formal education will also indicate they either have graduated or are currently working towards their degree.  In the most recent survey, the university exceeded its goal as 97% of respondents reported they have either graduated with or are currently working toward a graduate degree.

Goal 5: Preparation for Graduate School

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has a goal that 90% of respondents to the Alumni Survey who indicate they are continuing their formal education after graduating from WBU will say that their undergraduate education at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ prepared them for graduate education.  The university met this goal in the most recent survey, with 90% indicating their undergraduate education at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ prepared them for additional study.

Service to God and Humankind

Goal 1: Student Spiritual Growth

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s mission is to prepare students not only for professional success but also for service to God and humankind.  51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has set a goal of 75% positive response on 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ contributing to the student’s religious beliefs as reflected on the Current Student Survey.  In the most recent Current Student Survey, 70% strongly agreed or agreed to the statement, “51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has enriched my Christian beliefs.”  20% neither agreed nor disagreed, while only 10% disagreed or strongly disagreed.  78% strongly agreed or agreed to the statement, “51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has enriched my Biblical knowledge.”  16% neither agreed nor disagreed, while only 6% disagreed or strongly disagreed.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ met its goal for enriching Biblical knowledge but was only in the threshold of acceptability for enriching Christian beliefs.  Evaluation of how to improve the latter score is currently ongoing.  Perhaps the questions need revision, for instance, how many of the 20% have Christian beliefs simply not enriched by 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ?

Goal 2: Alumni Service

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s mission is to prepare students not only for professional success but also for service to God and humankind.  51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ has set a goal of 75% positive response on alumni contributing to their communities as evidenced by active participation in civic and social activities, membership in volunteer groups, and church membership, as reflected on the Alumni Survey.  In the most recent Alumni Survey, 64% indicated they had been a member of a volunteer group that serves the community, while 69% indicated that they were members of a church.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ did not meet either goal.  Evaluation of how to improve these scores is currently ongoing.  Initial observations include the possibility that recent graduates have not yet had time to become established in their communities.  In addition, the responses may reflect a common post-COVID trend of decreased participation in social and religious organizations as a whole.
