SUBJECT: STUDENT PUBLICATIONS - PLAINVIEW CAMPUS
The purposes of student publications at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University are:
- to provide means and forums for the dissemination and presentation of information to and among members of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ community;
- to provide a practical and realistic learning experience for students who comprise the staff of each student publication;
- to provide a forum for the tasteful expression and discussion of diverse ideas, opinions, and creative efforts; and
- to provide a medium for the presentation of commercial, political, and other information and messages.
Goals - The goals of student publications at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University are:
- to provide information that is relevant, current, complete, comprehensive, accurate, balanced, responsible and fair;
- to develop work habits that are consistent with and sensitive to publication deadlines;
- to utilize available resources in a productive, educational, and cost-effective manner;
- to provide a realistic and relevant learning opportunity for students; and
- to produce a quality product in the terms of content, coverage, and design.
Guidelines - The contents of all student publications will be consistent with the mission and Christian orientation of the university. Any issue may be responsibly discussed as long as its treatment does not denigrate or defame the basic principles of the university, nor the Christian faith.
Student publications may responsibly discuss university policies, stating both supporting and opposing views, provided that criticism shall not maliciously attack any individual or attempt to incite defiance or disobedience to any university policy or regulation. Statements shall not be directed toward inciting disobedience or defiance of federal, state, or local laws or the promotion of civil disorder. Statements shall not be profane, indecent, or pornographic, nor shall they advertise the sale or use of alcoholic beverages. All content shall be consistent with the intellectual and academic nature of the university.
All student publications must conform to policy 7.4.1, University Identifications Guidelines and policy 8.1.1, The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as they relate to university identification and student rights to privacy.
The Office of Communications is charged with insuring adherence to these guidelines.
Publications - The TrailBlazer owned and published by 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University and serves as a laboratory newspaper for the School of Fine Arts. The newspaper is prepared primarily by students and is distributed free. Its editors and staff members are selected by supervising faculty. The dean of the School of Fine Arts, in cooperation with a faculty advisor from the School of Fine Arts, oversees the formatting and publication of The TrailBlazer.
The Traveler is owned and published by 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University as a yearbook or annual record of the year. It is prepared primarily by students and is distributed to all Plainview campus students. Its editors and staff members are selected by the Office of Communications.
